From a very young age, I have had challenges with believing in myself. This is something I seldom, if ever, bring up in discussion. But sometime those truths that we keep to ourselves are the keys to the real juice in life.
What are some of the things I’ve had doubts about? The list is long. Let me see, there was dating. After all, why would anyone want to go out with me?
There was even my intelligence. I always felt like a was a step behind the other kids in the class.
Now fast forward to my recent past. I will have days and sometimes longer stretches when I doubt what I’m doing in real estate investing. Challenges will come up for me, like the other day when I had three deals fall through that I thought I had in the slam dunk category.
Once upon a time, getting shut down on three deals would have shut me down. Instead of sulking about what happened, I got busy. I looked at all my options for putting in offers, and I ended up putting in five offers on other deals.
It’s O.K. to doubt yourself. Self doubt is really a fear that says, "I’m not enough".
When you have a string of things that don’t go your way, it’s tempting to buy into an old belief about yourself that says, "See, I told you that you don’t really have what it takes". That old belief, if you let it take hold, can lead to a feeling of dispair and inaction.
I challenge you to instead grab onto another set of beliefs that say, "I’m only going to buy great deals for me. That means I’m not going to get every deal in which I make an offer. I may not get the next one, or the one after that, but I’m going to get a great deal, and I’m going to get that great deal soon."
When I hold the latter beliefs, I will move quickly into action.
Imagine if you held those thoughts with you no matter what. Image that you were not capable of holding that belief that you are not enough. Would you be moved into actions that would support your success?
Yes, it’s O.K. to have self doubt. I have them all the time. Just recognize them when they come up, and move past them as quickly as you can. When you move into action, you leave those doubts behind.
